Pune has one of the largest student populations in the country. A significant chunk of that population is from Uttar Pradesh, which includes Lucknow. Every semester break, the same conversation happens in hostels and PGs: “Should I book flight tickets or travel by train?”
The train takes anywhere from 25 to 27 hours depending on which one you choose. The flight takes approximately 2 hours. For students doing this journey two or three times a year, flying is the easy choice. The challenge is knowing how to book it correctly so the trip does not cost more than it should.
Students from Lucknow often travel home during the same holiday periods, which can make flights more expensive and harder to book. Diwali is one of the busiest periods, so booking early becomes especially important. Flights in the 10 days before Diwali fill up faster than most students expect, and flight fares start increasing before that.
Holi sees the same pattern in March. Summer break from mid-May to June is a busy travel period as colleges close for the holidays. The rush at the end of the semester can catch many students off guard. Everyone books flights at roughly the same time, usually in the last week before exams end, which is precisely when options are tightest and prices are at their highest.
A few things that help:
If exam dates might shift, check if the airline offers any option that allows you to change your travel date without a huge fee on your Pune to Lucknow flight.
Many airlines in India offer a special discount to students travelling. For instance, if you are travelling with Air India Express, the airline offers a dedicated Student Fare on domestic flights. If you are carrying a laptop, extra clothes, or things you picked up at home, the extra baggage allowance can make this option more convenient.
In most cases, it can be booked directly through the website or app of your chosen carrier. At the airport, a valid student photo ID from the institution might be required at the check-in counter.
One thing most students do not know: web check-in is not available for most student fare bookings. Flight check-in has to happen at the counter, so reaching the airport at least 2-3 hours before departure is not optional.
For trips where the student fare does not apply, airlines offer multiple standard domestic options.
Booking a low baggage allowance and showing up with more than the allowed weight means paying extra at the airport counter, usually more than what it would have cost at the time of booking. It is one of the more common and avoidable mistakes on this route.
Getting to Pune Airport can take longer than expected, especially during peak hours. From Baner, Kothrud, or Hinjewadi, the drive can take 40 minutes to an hour. Viman Nagar and Hadapsar are closer, but evening traffic can still cause delays.
Plan to reach the airport at least 2 hours before departure. On busy travel days, allow some extra time for traffic.
Before heading to the airport, checking flight status takes less than a minute. If there is a delay, knowing before leaving campus is considerably better than finding out at the terminal with heavy bags and a cab already waiting.
Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport is around 15 to 20 km from the city centre. The airport itself is compact, and the exit process is quick. App-based cabs are available outside arrivals, and the drive to Gomti Nagar, Hazratganj, or Alambagh takes 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. Lucknow's roads are considerably calmer than Pune's, so the ride is usually predictable even during busy periods. If someone is picking up from the airport, the designated pickup area works better than waiting near the arrivals gate. On busy travel days around Diwali or semester breaks, the area outside arrivals gets congested quickly, and a little coordination before landing saves time on both ends.
For students travelling from Pune to Lucknow, booking early can make a big difference to both fares and convenience. Check your travel dates as soon as your exam schedule is clear, compare student and standard fares, and choose a baggage allowance that fits your trip. A little planning before the semester break can help you avoid higher fares, extra baggage charges, and last-minute airport stress.
